Selfhosting Your Online Radio Station is a Bad Idea. Here's Why
Selfhosting an online radio station seems like a wonderful idea at first. Then, reality hits.
Self-hosting Your Online Radio Station is a Bad Idea. Here's Why
Self-hosting everything is all the buzz nowadays. Want privacy when using your AI models? Self-host an open-source one using your very own hardware! Want to search the web without advertisements? Self-host an open-source search engine using your very own hardware! Want to start your own online radio station for free? Self-host your very own station for completely free using… you guessed it! An open-source solution and your very own hardware. Sounds amazing, right? I agree, it definitely does.
But wait, guess what doesn’t sound amazing? Your electricity bill increasing!
Let’s break the exact costs down: if you run a 400-watt gaming PC 24/7, here’s what that looks like with the average U.S. electricity rate of 15.22 cents per kilowatt-hour (kWh)¹:
• Daily usage: 0.4 kW × 24 hours = 9.6 kWh → $1.46/day (Not bad!)
• Monthly usage: 9.6 kWh × 30 days = 288 kWh → $43.83/month (Oh wow, it’s starting to really add up...)
• Annual usage: 9.6 kWh × 365 days = 3,504 kWh → $533.33/year (Holy fiddlesticks! That’s some serious bread.)
That’s over $500 a year just to keep your server running. And that doesn’t include cooling, backups, or any additional hardware. Oh and, by the way, that’s on a budget gaming PC’s power consumption. It can be as much as nearly triple that price on a higher end model and even more on a high-end server.
Still not convinced? Maybe the fact that your personal internet connection can be easily taken offline will. When self-hosting software, your Internet Protocol (IP) address is exposed to the public. With this information, people can launch full-scale targeted attacks against your home internet connection, resulting in it possibly going completely offline. And, while there are ways to prevent this (such as using Cloudflare Tunnel), they do not solve the problem of speed. If you want your station to be blazing fast, you need a stable, speedy internet connection. But hold on, guess what? That's yet another expense you can add to your lengthy list of expenses that have already accumulated.
For blazing-fast gigabit internet (the speed at which Radiocast’s own servers are connected), you will need to pony up an average of an extra $75 per month.² Holy moly guacamole! We’re at over $118.83 in monthly expenses so far. It’s absolutely absurd.
This also does not include all of the extra work you have to do. Keeping the server maintained, updating the software, making your own website and worrying about hosting it and keeping it functional
Oh, what’s that? Radiocast’s cheapest plan is only $5.99 per month for up to 10 GB of storage and tons of other features! That means you can start a station for only 5.04% of the price of self-hosting with Radiocast. And you can do just that using this link: Radiocast Hosting
