Free radio hosting: compare free and managed options

A free radio host may mean a free account with tight limits, a temporary trial, an open-source stack you install yourself, or a free listener directory that does not actually host your broadcast. None is automatically wrong. The important question is what work, limits, or upgrade costs arrive when your station starts attracting listeners.

Radiocast does not position its managed hosting as a permanently free tier. Instead, its entry plan begins at $5.99 per month and can be cancelled anytime. That gives a station a predictable, low-cost way to test real workflows—music uploads, AutoDJ, live handoffs, listener capacity, and a public station presence—without treating production broadcasting as an unsupported experiment.

Do not only test whether audio plays. Before relying on a host for a public station, upload representative media, create a few playlists, schedule a daypart, and test a handoff from AutoDJ to a live DJ. Invite a small group to listen from phones, browsers, and different networks. That reveals more than an empty dashboard can.

Confirm what happens at your expected peak. A low listener cap can be fine for a private proof of concept but frustrating during a first promotion or event. Radiocast lists a concurrent-listener limit per plan: Professional supports up to 100 and Small Business up to 200. If another provider offers a trial or demo, check its duration, eligibility, included features, and when billing begins.

The cheapest stream is not always the least expensive station. If you need to maintain a VPS, patch software, resolve outages, and connect separate tools for a player, analytics, and automation, the time cost can outweigh a modest hosting plan. A paid managed plan is a different tradeoff: monthly cost in exchange for a bundled station workflow and less server administration.

Once the format works, use the same decision criteria as any established station: audience size, library storage, live programming, support, and the ability to grow. A small monthly plan should make those tradeoffs clearer, not lock you into a confusing migration later.
