Icecast vs Shoutcast: choose the workflow, not just the protocol

Both are streaming-server options in a station’s delivery path: a source program sends audio to a server, then listener apps connect to the station’s stream. Each can support a working radio setup, but compatibility depends on the server version, source client, player, and hosting configuration—not just the name shown in a control panel.

AutoDJ, playlist scheduling, and live-DJ handoffs usually belong to the automation or station-management layer around the streaming server. Compare those separately. A server choice alone does not tell you whether a host includes music storage, scheduling, listener analytics, or support.

Icecast is open-source software under GPL v2. Its documentation describes source clients publishing to mountpoints, with listeners connecting to those stream paths; one server can carry multiple mountpoints. This makes mountpoint and source-client configuration central to a migration.

SHOUTcast DNAS is a server product with its own SHOUTcast directory integration and support for SHOUTcast source-client workflows, including legacy compatibility described by SHOUTcast. Check the current DNAS version and your exact encoder mode before assuming an old configuration will work unchanged.

Icecast is a strong candidate when you need an open-source server and a mountpoint-based workflow your encoder and players already support. SHOUTcast is a strong candidate when an existing SHOUTcast source setup or its directory integration is important to your station. Neither is universally better; compatibility testing matters more than a blanket winner.
